Situated along Toh Aka Lane, one of the narrowest alleys within the core zone of the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site, this heritage townhouse restoration celebrates the rich architectural character of its historic setting while adapting the home for contemporary living.
The project involves the restoration of an existing two-storey heritage house together with the addition of a new rear storey, carefully integrating the extension with the original structure. The design recalls the spirit of a bygone era while introducing contemporary interventions that enhance functionality, comfort, and the overall living experience.
The essence of the building’s heritage is thoughtfully preserved throughout the house. Gold-painted timber louvred shutters are reinterpreted as internal partition screens, creating a distinctive architectural feature that reflects the home’s historic identity. A central courtyard continues to serve as the heart of the residence, drawing natural light and ventilation deep into the interior, while the original textured walls and existing materials are carefully retained to celebrate the authenticity and craftsmanship of the heritage structure.
The result is a sensitive balance between conservation and contemporary design, creating a home that respects its historic context while meeting the needs of modern living.
